RAPID CITY, SD--The South Dakota Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources (DANR) has selected the City of Rapid City and its wastewater treatment system for the 2021 Operation and Maintenance Wastewater Treatment Award.
The award was presented to the city last week during the 2022 South Dakota Water and Wastewater Association Wastewater Operators Seminar in Pierre. City Water Reclamation Superintendent Dave Van Cleave accepted the award on behalf of the City of Rapid City.
The award recognizes outstanding wastewater system operation and environmental compliance with the facility’s surface water discharge permit. The City last received the award in 2019.
Qualifications are based on system compliance with state environmental requirements, quality of the treated and discharged wastewater, monitoring reports, state inspections and proper operation and maintenance of the wastewater treatment facility.
"Wastewater treatment systems are essential services that are often taken for granted,” said DANR Secretary Hunter Roberts. “These awards recognize the dedication of the wastewater operators who go above and beyond to keep these systems running smoothly.”
City officials are pleased to receive the honor.
"Anytime you are recognized for outstanding operation and maintenance of your wastewater system and being in compliance with state permit requirements, it’s a great honor," said Van Cleave. "It's a credit to the hard work and dedicated service of the wastewater staff who recognize the importance of the City's wastewater treatment system to the Rapid City community and general public."
This is the sixth time in the past 13 years the City has received the award.
